The ReStore is a store that supports the efforts of Habitat for Humanity. It’s the perfect way to decorate your home in a greener manner. You don’t have to spend a lot of money and your house can look awesome! I wanted to share some tips on how you can decorate your home using the Habitat ReStore.
How to Decorate Your Home Using the Habitat ReStore
Know when your ReStore is open.
The tricky thing about the ReStore is that it’s not open all the time. When some people get their mind on decorating, they just assume everything is open. Knowing their hours can save you a wasted trip.
Create a budget for decorating your home.
The best thing about the ReStore is that everything is way cheaper than a regular store. You can get a lot more for your money. However, a budget is still great because it helps you know how far your money will go.
Do a practice run.
I like to head into the Habitat Restore and scope out what is available. It’s nice knowing that a lot of this stuff is reused, so I know it’s better for the earth. Scoping out what your local ReStore carries is a good idea on so many levels. Every ReStore is different. Keep in mind that you may see something you want, in that case, go ahead and grab it because it may not be there when you get back.
Upcycling just makes sense.
Keep in mind that everything you buy from the ReStore won’t be in perfect condition. This is a great excuse to upcycle and make something new. Upcycling means taking something you find and giving it new life. Maybe you’ll come across an old wooden kitchen chair. You can spray paint it with chalk paint and have an awesome new chair that didn’t even cost you the fraction of what a new chair would cost.
Be creative with what you find.
I think some people have a hard time going into a place like the ReStore and finding stuff they’ll use in their home. Honestly, you must be creative with what you find. You are bringing used pieces of furniture and home pieces to life. Although, sometimes you will get lucky and find something that is already ready to use.
Look for the right home décor pieces.
The first big step in decorating using the Habitat ReStore is to look for the home décor pieces. When you enter the ReStore you will notice there is a lot available. However, you can narrow is down by sticking with the pieces you are interested in purchasing. The ReStore will have furniture pieces, lamps, pictures, rugs, and so much more. It may be easier to piece together one room at a time as you decorate your home.
Upcycling from the ReStore allows you to do more with your décor.
One of my favorite parts of upcycling from the ReStore is that there are so many possibilities. Whether you have a college student who needs an awesome looking dorm room or a new baby, you can find what you need at the ReStore. I have seen people find the exact piece that they need at the store, but they have also found pieces to make something that they wanted to create.
Make sure you want to make the purchase.
Before you purchase anything, make sure you want to make the purchase. Double check with the return policy of the store. Every ReStore is a little different in how they handle returns and refunds.
Give items to the ReStore
In your journey to decorate your home, you may come across items that you no longer need. Why not donate them to the ReStore? You will help a great cause and you will also help the earth be a little greener in the process. Millions of items are thrown in the dumpster every year. Upcycling, recycling, and second hand use is the best way to combat this issue.
One thing is for sure, when you decorate your home using the Habitat ReStore, you are being green, upcycling, and supporting a good cause. The items are inexpensive enough, that you have a chance to be unique and creative with your décor.
