Air fryer fish recipes tend to come out with perfect, flaky texture in a short amount of time. Try this air fryer tilapia the next time you need to get a flavorful, nutritious dinner on the table quickly. This air fryer fish is gluten-free and can be made Paleo by exchanging regular mayonnaise for avocado mayonnaise (great for those with egg allergies too!)
Air Fryer Tilapia Almondine comes from the book Every Day Easy Air Fryer: 100 Recipes Bursting with Flavor by Uravashi Pitre. I made this air fryer tilapia for dinner last night and plan to make another of the author’s recipes later this week (hello Thai Curry Meatballs!) She also has several Instant Pot cookbooks out and you know I could put those to good use in a hurry.
Every Day Easy Air Fryer: 100 Recipes Bursting with Flavor
In the meantime, I have a few supplies to order, because until I read Every Day Easy Air Fryer I didn’t know how much more versatile an air fryer can be with just a few accessories. While I didn’t need to use any of them for this air fryer fish recipe, Urvashi Pitre recommends the following special accessories to get the most mileage out of your air fryer:
- Heat- Safe Baking Pan – a 7″ round pan will fit in a 3.7-quart air fryer as well as the 5-quart size. The author uses a 7″ round pan for any recipe requiring a pan so that you don’t have to buy multiple sizes for her recipes. Now you’ll have the ability to make things like brownies in your air fryer! It’s possible to use a glass pan that you have on hand, but required tweaking cook times and temperatures.
- Trivet or Rack – Air fryer recipes need to cook in a single layer so if you want to make a larger quantity or double your recipe, a rack will allow you to cook everything at once instead of in batches.
- Springform pan – Definitely not a necessity, but who wouldn’t want to make a perfectly shaped frittata for brunch or cake in their air fryer, right?
I have my eye on this set which gives you two of the options above plus a darling little egg bite mold. If your family is like mine, everyone likes their eggs a different way. This looks like to perfect way for Hubs and I to both have what we like in our omelets.
Anyway, on to our Tilapia Almondine recipe!
Air Fryer Tilapia
Ingredients
- ½ cup almond flour
- 2 Tablespoons butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ cup mayonnaise (or avocado mayonnaise for Paleo or egg-free diets)
- 2 tilapia fillets*
- ½ cup thinly sliced almonds
- vegetable oil spray
*My tilapia fillets were small (the kind you purchase individually frozen in a bag to thaw as needed) and so I was able to get away with putting three in my basket without much overlap. If you have substantial tilapia fillets that you purchased at the seafood counter of your grocer, you’ll probably only be able to fit 2 just like the recipe calls for. See where a rack might be nice?
Directions
In a small bowl, mix together the almond flour, butter, pepper, and salt
Spread the mayonnaise on both sides of each fish fillet.
Can I just say that I love the mayo method? I almost always do an egg wash, but this was so much easier and more flavorful. Also if you are on the Paleo diet or have an egg allergy, you can use avocado mayonnaise instead.
Dredge the fillets in the almond flour mixture
Spread the sliced almonds on one side of each fillet, pressing lightly to adhere.
Spray the air fryer basket with vegetable oil spray. Place the fish fillets in the basket.
Set the air fryer to 325°F for 10 minutes, or until the fish flakes easily with a fork.
10 minutes was perfect for my tilapia fillets. Cook just until the tilapia flakes with a fork and keep an eye on the almonds too so they don’t char.
