I just ordered some water beads for sensory play and the kids had so much fun with them, I’ll be ordering more! Sensory play water beads are the same bulk water beads that are used in centerpieces, table decorations, and plants. They are non-toxic and pretty much mess-free which makes them ideal for a water beads sensory table or bin.
For this little sensory bin I used around 4,000 sensory water beads and mixed a few toys throughout. Gus is hesitant about new sensory experiences so I made sure he knew there was a Tootsie Roll in there too just to provide a little motivation. It worked!
Water beads for sensory play
Another cool thing about these sensory water beads is that you can store them and use them again and again. I have mind stored in rectangular Rubbermaid containers.
All you have to do is keep them moist and you’re all set! They will eventually “go bad” (lose their shape and get grainy/mushy) but as affordable as they are, water beads for sensory play are still a good value. That pack of 20,000 beads above can easily fill a water table with enough sensory play water beads to have lots of fun.
If you aren’t creating a water beads sensory table, you may choose to hydrate only a portion of your water beads and save the rest for another time. I actually tossed 10,000 of them into the kids’ bathwater earlier in the week and they had a grand time. It took me about 10 minute to fish them out with a colander afterward though, so be aware!
If you drop the sensory beads, they will just roll around. If you step on them (or your toddler grinds them into the carpet) you just wind up with jelly-like mush that’s easily picked up rather than a wet mess. They are very durable and it’s not like they splash everywhere if they do break. Give them a try! It think you and your child will love sensory play with water beads.
