Navdy Heads-Up Display and More!

Having a nice, new car has never been a priority for me. You can take a quick look around the rest of my blog and figure out pretty quickly where I’d rather spend my vehicle budget instead, particularly while the kids are little and “we can’t have nice things” anyway. While I only require that a vehicle reliably get me from point A to point B in reasonable comfort, I must admit that when Hubs brought home his 2016 Jeep Wrangler last year, I was a little envious. Not of the vehicle itself, but of all the techie features!

Get smart features for your older vehicle with Navdy. Why it's perfect for your next road trip or travel around town.

When you’re driving a 12 year-old CRV that still has a tape deck, it’s easy to forget you’re perfectly content with it once your husband starts firing up the bluetooth capabilities in his new acquisition. I briefly considered a newer make/model just for the up-to-date features! I would have quickly regretted going against my personal priorities and financial goals to do that. Thankfully, I don’t have to drive in the Stone Age anymore and it didn’t require a car purchase to do it. Meet Navdy:

Navdy is a dashboard-mounted device that takes everything you need from your phone, plus all your car information like speed and fuel mileage, and projects it as a transparent image right in front of you. In doing so, it means you can safely stay connected to your maps, phone calls, music, text messages, app notifications and more, without ever taking your eyes off the road.

Navdy connects to your car to your smartphone via bluetooth and the Navdy app.

The device  uses head-up display technology to provide you with features like:

  • Turn-by-turn navigation with live traffic information.
  • Music control without needing to touch your phone.
  • Text message and app notifications projected over the road ahead.
  • Phone calls that can be answered with simple hand gestures.
  • Voice control to start a trip simply by speaking.
  • And much more.

Using the Navdy Dial (pictured below) and the hand gesture feature, you can control your phone without picking it up or looking at it.

Navdy Navigation

Here’s how Navdy has made my life easier so far:

1. I can actually see my speedometer. Being short has it’s problems and one of mine is the steering wheel blocking half the view of my dash. Thanks to Navdy, not only can I see my speed at all times, but I don’t have to take my eyes off the road for a second to do it.

My usual view

2. In the same vein, Navdy tells me when I’m over the speed limit (visually, audibly or both if I choose) so I’ve slowed down noticeably just through awareness.

3. I can enjoy Spotify in the car. Prior to Navdy I really didn’t bother because it was too dangerous to fiddle with the app. Now I can just choose a playlist before I leave the driveway and control everything after that using the Navdy dial. It’s actually less distracting than fiddling with the radio. Same goes for my Voxer app.

4. It’s a silly little thing, but a compass! Sometimes you need to know your SW from your NE and my Honda (bless it’s heart, y’all) doesn’t even tell me that on the rearview mirror. With Navdy I can switch up my dashboard view and that includes a compass option.

This is my first summer with the Navdy and I’m a little concerned about the heat. The device will let you know when it’s getting overheated and we’ve had that happen already this spring during a shopping trip. Fortunately, the device is easy to remove from the dash and slip in my purse if heat or security are an issue so that will probably be my solution.

Thanks to Navdy, I’ll be happily rolling around in my CRV until I’m ready for a newer vehicle on my own terms and for my own reasons. That alone makes it worth the $599 price tag in my book.
