How to Avoid Stretch Marks During Pregnancy

Judging by all the stretch mark prevention products out there I’m not the only vain mama in the world who wants to know how to avoid stretch marks during pregnancy. Lest you think I’m too conceited, I did worry about more important things during my pregnancy such as good nutrition, birth defects, miscarriage, etc. However, I’ve got admit that I dreaded those seemingly inevitable white scars.

All the stretch mark prevention tips out there have a common theme: try our method but know that there is no sure-fire way to prevent stretch marks and if you have a genetic predisposition for stretch marks you will probably get them. This was bad news for me since I have them in other areas (thank you puberty). Still, I wasn’t going to go down without a fight, at the very least hoping I could reduce the amount or intensity of the marks. My vigilance paid off because lo and behold my belly is stretch mark free! I’m going to share my method in hopes that it will help some other mamas-to-be out there. No point in proudly wearing those “badges of motherhood” if you don’t have to, right?

How to Avoid Stretch Marks During Pregnancy

First and foremost, drink lots of water. I started drinking close to a gallon per day when I found out I was pregnant.

Secondly, gain a healthy amount of weight. If you gain more than the recommended amount, your skin will have a harder time accommodating the growth.

Third, apply this home remedy for stretch marks to your tummy twice per day starting as soon as you find out you are pregnant (or earlier if you are trying to conceive!)

  • 2oz hazelnut oil
  • 2oz wheat germ oil
  • 4 drops carrot seed oil
  • 4 drops geranium oil

Blend together and store in an empty squeeze bottle. I used an empty hair conditioner bottle. A little goes a long way and I only had to make this blend three times throughout the whole pregnancy.

My disclaimer won’t be any different from the rest of them out there. I have no scientific evidence that this will prevent your stretch marks. I only know that it worked for me in spite of my genetic inclination toward them. Good luck and congrats on your baby-to-be!
